Australia's position as a leading supplier of minerals critical to economic growth and the energy transition depends on the industry's ability to continually improve safety, productivity and operational performance.

For service providers, that means making deliberate investments in capability and working closely with customers to anticipate future requirements. The impending arrival of two new-generation DR24HD drilling rigs is a demonstration of Ventia’s commitment to invest in high-performance drilling solutions when conditions demand it.

The new rigs will be deployed in the Pilbara in late 2026.

Investing to stay in front

The Pilbara remains one of Australia's most important resource regions, but also one of its most operationally challenging.

Delivering consistent drilling performance requires highly specialised equipment capable of operating safely and efficiently in harsh and remote environments. At the same time, customers are seeking greater visibility over performance, improved workforce safety and confidence that critical contractors are investing alongside them for the long term.

Recognising these trends, Ventia has embarked on a fleet modernisation program designed to complement its existing dual rotary fleet while positioning the business for future growth. This investment has focused on building capability that aligns with where the industry is heading.

Ventia is investing in new dual rotary rigs to support critical mineral demand across the Pilbara

Our customers are increasingly looking for safer, more efficient and more technology-enabled ways of working.

said Kyle Koziol, EGM Resources at Ventia.

"That means investing not only in new equipment but ensuring that equipment is designed to support future operational requirements around automation, digital visibility and workforce safety."

Delivering a step change in safety

Safety remains the primary driver behind the investment. The new DR24HD rigs include remote-operated drilling capability that allows operators to control drilling functions from dedicated remote consoles.

Additional automation features and remote rig-up functionality further reduce the need for manual intervention during key phases of operation.

Combining global engineering with Australian expertise

The new DR24HD rigs are being purpose-built in partnership with leading drilling equipment manufacturer Foremost in Canada. A critical component of the project is being delivered onshore by Ventia's own technical specialists.

Following completion in Canada, the rigs will be transferred to Ventia's Withcott facility in Queensland where Australian-based engineering and operational teams will undertake integration, fit-out and final modifications before deployment.

This approach enables the rigs to be tailored to specific customer requirements while leveraging the deep operational knowledge of teams that understand the realities of working in Australian mining environments.

The process also allows Ventia to apply its rigorous change management and engineering governance frameworks, ensuring every modification is controlled, documented and aligned with operational requirements front of mind. Importantly, it keeps high-value engineering, technical and capability-building work within Australia while strengthening Ventia's internal expertise.

Building smarter and more connected operations

The investment is equally focused on operational performance. Modern drilling operations generate significant amounts of data, providing opportunities to improve decision-making, optimise performance and better understand asset health.

The DR24HD rigs incorporate digital monitoring systems capable of delivering real-time performance information and operational insights. Combined with advanced electric-over-hydraulic controls, the new fleet provides greater precision, improved responsiveness and more consistent drilling performance across varying ground conditions.

For customers, this translates into improved visibility, enhanced operational control and the ability to make more informed decisions in the field. As resources projects become increasingly dependent on data-driven delivery models, the ability to integrate operational intelligence into everyday decision-making will become a key differentiator across the sector.

Continuing to invest across the fleet

The new rigs represent a significant milestone, however Ventia’s commitment to the industry extends beyond new equipment alone.

The company continues to invest in maintenance, upgrades and technology improvements, as well as it’s people across its resources business.

Supporting the future of Australia's resources sector

The introduction of the DR24HD fleet reflects a broader philosophy that is shaping investment across Ventia's resources business. Customers need partners that are coming to them with solutions that support new ways of working and building the capacity to support future growth.

Our customers want a partner who can solve problems, take accountability for outcomes, improve productivity and help them operate more safely and efficiently. That's where Ventia continues to invest - in our people, our equipment and our technology.
