Challenge

Traditional diesel generators, while dependable, contribute heavily to carbon emissions. Our goal was to minimise environmental impact without compromising performance, aligning with our broader sustainability objectives and customer commitments.

Solution

We introduced Hybrid Generator technology combining renewable energy source with traditional diesel generation, as well as advanced control systems for intelligent energy management. These included remote monitoring and data access for enhanced visibility and control.

Impact

We achieved a significant saving of approximately 8,700 liters of diesel fuel within eight months at Bohle River, avoiding around 23.6 tCO₂ emissions.

Remote site facilities traditionally rely on conventional diesel generators for power.

While dependable, these generators come with significant drawbacks:

  • High fuel consumption, leading to increased operational costs
  • Large carbon footprint, conflicting with sustainability goals
  • Limited efficiency, as energy output cannot be optimised dynamically

Sustainability is a core priority for Ventia as part of our strategy of Redefining Service Excellence, so we developed a smarter, greener solution.

To address these challenges, we deployed a Hybrid Generator at Bohle River, Townsville, QLD. This innovative system combines:

  • Renewable energy source with traditional diesel generation
  • Advanced control technology for intelligent energy management
  • Remote monitoring and real-time data access for better oversight

The results were impressive:

  • Fuel savings: ~8,700 litres over eight months
  • Carbon emissions reduction: 74%
  • Operational efficiency: Optimised energy performance through smart controls

The success at Bohle River paved the way for a second Hybrid Generator at Lyndoch, NSW reinforcing our commitment to sustainable power solutions. As a result, at Lyndoch we saved 5,000 litres of diesel in seven months, avoiding 13.7 tCO₂ emissions (68% emission reduction). The Lyndoch installation builds on this momentum, proving that hybrid technology is not just a trial, it’s the future.
