Te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed in 1840 by 540 rangatira (chiefs), including 13 wāhine toa (women of high status) whose leadership and wisdom continue to enrich Aotearoa’s national legacy.

At Ventia, we acknowledge the history of Te Tiriti because understanding it is essential to building a respectful and shared future. It shapes how we serve the communities we mahi in and ensures we contribute positively to Māori wellbeing and outcomes.

Ventia Progress: Guided by Te Roopū – Te Ara o Rehua

With guidance from Te Roopū (cultural leaders) and our Kaitohutohu Māori, we have seen major growth and positive cultural change across Ventia.

Māori Workforce Growth

Over the past three years, Māori representation has grown from 9% to 31%, reflecting the trust and value Māori place in Ventia as an employer.

Māori in Leadership

More Māori are stepping into leadership, supervisory, advisory and specialist roles, strengthening our organisational capability. Today, 25% of our Aotearoa Leadership Team are Māori.

Supporting Māori Enterprise

Our annual spend with Māori-owned businesses has tripled over three years, supporting the growth of Māori enterprise nationally. The Māori economy, valued at $126b after the last census, is projected to reach $200b by 2030 - with 73% of that growth driven by small to medium Māori businesses.

Strengthening Partnerships with Iwi, Hapū & Māori Organisations

Across the motu, we continue to deepen relationships with mana whenua, Māori trusts, landowners and Māori SMEs. These partnerships are grounded in respect, reciprocity and alignment with local tikanga.

These outcomes reflect continuous effort, cultural leadership and Ventia’s genuine commitment to Te Ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our journey continues - with purpose, partnership and respect.
