Mursal Nawabi is one of Ventia’s 33 first-year graduates in 2025 and one of 18 women participating in the program this year. As a young female engineer based in Melbourne, Mursal is excited about the opportunities Ventia provides within the graduate program. Her first placement is on the specialised Defence contract Land8120.

Mursal graduated with a degree in automotive engineering. She was the only woman in her course. During her time studying, Mursal undertook work placement with Yarra Trams, who are responsible for the public trams in Melbourne.

My interest in engineering stemmed from wanting to know how things work and what’s happening behind the scenes.

Mursal is deeply committed to professional development, seeking to become as knowledgeable as possible across the full range that a career in engineering has to offer. In Mursal’s short time with Ventia, she noticed straight away that Ventia truly values its people, which she feels sets Ventia apart as a great employer.

“I think it’s the happy people that work at Ventia that draws people to the company.”

The Ventia Graduate Program

The Ventia Graduate Program is a two-year program consisting of three placements across the business. The program is designed to provide aspiring professionals with an extensive array of growth opportunities, ensuring a smooth and successful transition from university to work life.

“The grad program has been very informative so far, and the process has set us all up for success.”

Mursal has already had the chance to meet her fellow graduates during induction. Mursal has enjoyed the camaraderie and support of meeting other grads across a range of specialities from fellow engineers to business graduates.

Defence Land8120

Mursal’s first rotation as a part of the Ventia grad program is on Defence contract Land8120. Phase 1 of the Land8120 contract involves Ventia leading a team of equipment manufacturers and local engineering specialists, to supply approximately 300 earthmoving and material handling vehicles to Defence. Vehicles undergo a rigorous verification and validation process to ensure that specific Defence requirements are met.

Mursal spent her first few days on this contract at site visits, meeting the team, and seeing the vehicles that she will be focused on in her role. Mursal shared that a big part of her role on the contract will involve teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking. Something about the Land8120 contract in particular that has surprised Mursal is how client-facing her daily role will be.

Mursal is excited about the scope of work in the Defence space at Ventia. It’s an area she never expected to be working in when she was studying, and she’s looking forward to learning about a whole new area of engineering.

It’s a good opportunity to deepen my knowledge in areas that perhaps weren’t my expertise when studying. I think you learn best when you’re thrown in the deep end.

A Future in Engineering

Mursal is excited about what her future holds within Ventia in the grad program and beyond. She looks forward to continuing to hone her skills and become an expert in as many business areas as possible.

I aspire to be a well-rounded engineer that is versatile and can work my way around most projects and add value to a team.

We wish Mursal all the best on her first placement with Ventia!
