Nestled in the heart of Tāmaki Makaurau, the Pourewa Native Seed Nursery stands as a testament to Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and their commitment to environmental restoration and community connection.

What began as a reforestation project at Bastion Point has blossomed into a vibrant nursery that sources seeds locally and cultivates native plants with deep cultural significance.

Seeds with Soul

For Wendy, the nursery’s Native Plants Specialist, seeds are far more than just botanical material - they’re her “babies.” With a maternal tenderness, she carefully explains the intricate process of seed cultivation. Some seeds require delicate handling - cleaned and stored in the refrigerator with soil, then meticulously prepared for planting. She treats each seed with the same care a parent would show a child, understanding that some are fragile and require special attention.

The seed collection process is a nuanced art. Some seeds are tiny - barely visible, like delicate specks - while others are more substantial. Wendy knows exactly how to nurture each variety, whether it’s native grasses or tree seeds.

She explains the importance of companion planting, how different plants support each other’s growth, and how some seeds need specific conditions to germinate.

During a recent visit, Ventia’s Community Impact Programme Manager, Zenovia, walked the grounds with Puna, the Operations Manager, and Wendy, the Native Plans Specialist. The site, formerly a pony club, was gifted back to the iwi and transformed into a living, breathing ecosystem. Beyond just growing plants, the nursery embodies a holistic approach to environmental stewardship - using no chemicals, relying on volunteer support, and maintaining a community food garden or Māra Kai that harvests fresh produce every Friday.

Growing Together

The nursery’s philosophy goes beyond simple plant cultivation. As Wendy explains, it’s about understanding the natural cycles and recognising that each seed carries a story. From tiny native grass seeds to carefully nurtured tree saplings, every plant represents a connection to the land and its history.

With ongoing orders and a growing reputation for sustainable practices, Pourewa Native Seed Nursery is more than just a nursery. It’s a living example of cultural preservation, environmental education, and community resilience. Each seed is a promise, each plant a testament to the enduring spirit of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and their deep connection to the whenua (land).

Ventia is proud to partner with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and the Pourewa Nursery as part of our Seeds of Hope initiative, a Matariki gift to our communities. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to nurturing the whenua (land) and supporting intergenerational wellbeing. By working alongside Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, whose mātauranga (knowledge) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship/stewardship) shape every seedling grown at Pourewa, we’re helping to grow something lasting - rooted in purpose, connection, and care.
