What do telecommunications towers and water reservoirs have in common?

At first glance, very little. Yet the same engineering principles used to assess and upgrade telecommunications infrastructure has helped Ventia deliver an innovative reservoir roof renewal solution for a water utility client.

The project challenged traditional assumptions about where expertise comes from. Rather than relying on experience from within the water sector, Ventia brought together specialists with backgrounds spanning telecommunications, infrastructure and water engineering to tackle a complex asset renewal problem. The result was a solution that improved design efficiency, reduced delivery time and provided long-term benefits for the customer.

As infrastructure owners face growing pressure to extend asset life, manage costs and improve resilience, opportunities increasingly exist to apply proven ideas from one industry to another. This project demonstrated the value of that approach, and what is possible at Ventia through our Engineering and Professional Services team.

More than a standard solution

Water utilities across Australia are facing increasing pressure to renew ageing assets while maintaining reliability, water quality and operational performance. Reservoir roof replacement projects present a unique challenge, requiring careful consideration of structural integrity, constructability, maintenance requirements and whole-of-life asset performance.

Ventia, as a part of the GCISolutions Joint Venture with Downer, is engaged to support a program of reservoir roof replacements on the Gold Coast. The engineering required to facilitate this is complex, and Ventia recognised an opportunity to bring together engineers with experience from multiple industries to deliver a practical and innovative solution. The project involved the design of new lightweight aluminium roof structures, replacement of ageing pipework and the development of solutions that would improve long-term asset performance while minimising maintenance requirements.

Bringing a different perspective

While reservoir infrastructure is different from telecommunications infrastructure, many of the engineering challenges are remarkably similar.

Telecommunications engineers routinely assess existing structures, undertake load and capacity checks, work within constrained brownfield environments and develop repeatable solutions that can be deployed efficiently across large asset portfolios. These same principles translate effectively to water infrastructure projects, particularly where ageing assets require renewal or modification.

This cross-sector thinking proved particularly valuable in identifying opportunities to standardise design elements, improve design efficiency and apply lessons learned from previous projects to accelerate delivery.

Engineering capability built for the future

As asset owners continue to invest in the renewal and resilience of critical infrastructure, the ability to draw on experience from across multiple industries will increasingly become a competitive advantage. Ventia's multidisciplinary engineering capability is designed to do exactly that - bringing together the right people, skills and experience to solve complex challenges and deliver lasting value for our customers.

That is why Ventia offers an integrated multidisciplinary engineering capability. By bringing together engineers from different backgrounds and sectors, we create an environment where knowledge, innovation and lessons learned can be shared across projects and industries.

The reservoir roof renewal program is a great example of what this approach can achieve. Expertise developed in one sector was successfully applied to a different asset class, resulting in innovative solutions, efficient delivery and positive outcomes for the customer.
