In teams across Australia and New Zealand, whether in transport or facilities management, environment or transmission and distribution, Ventia’s project managers know one thing for sure, no day is the same as the next.
Omid Bassam is the Senior Project Manager on our Auckland Council full facilities maintenance contracts in New Zealand and says that the variety in his role is one of the things he enjoys the most.
“I could start the day at the beach, then have a meeting after lunch at a park in the city,” Omid says. “The following day I’ll be at a community centre. The one constant is that we’re always thinking of how we best deliver for our client.”
Omid looks after projects for Auckland Council ranging in value up to $500,000. A recent example was the re-flooring of a community centre that grew to encompass work on draining and roofing works.
“We delivered this project on time and to budget, whilst managing five different sub-contractors with up to 10 people working on site at any given time.”
The challenge of managing sub-contractors, including balancing competing demands and delivery schedules and ensuring that safety is always top of mind, is a skill required by all our project managers.
Our project managers have diverse backgrounds; Omid has a Masters of Construction Management and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and is PMP (Project Management Professional) certified.
“I spent a number of years working on new builds for large commercial buildings,” Omid says. “But my new role at Ventia is a different challenge because it includes a diverse range of smaller to mid-sized projects.”
“However, it doesn’t matter if it’s a job worth $10,000 or $1 million, the focus on health and safety and the stakeholder management requirements are equally as important.”
