Construction of tunnels in Auckland

Next stop Te Wai Horotiu (Aotea) station! We're once again excited to get to work on New Zealand's largest transport infrastructure project, City Rail Link in Auckland.

City Rail Link (CRL) consists of twin 3.45km-long railway tunnels connecting downtown's Waitematā Station (Britomart) with a re-developed Maungawhau Station (Mt Eden). Two new underground stations will open up central city access along the route - Karanga a Hape (Karangahape) and Te Wai Horotiu (Aotea).

Following the successful delivery of specialist electrical services for Waitematā (Britomart) station as part of the CRL project, Ventia has now been chosen to deliver installation of systems associated with the electrical, communications and associated containment for the two new underground stations.

Karen Boyes, Ventia's Project Director, Electricity & Gas said:

The Ventia team is really proud to be playing a role in this major infrastructure project - helping to enhance our city's transport network for the benefit of the community.

Additional services

Ventia is also providing additional professional services to the Link Alliance (the consortium delivering the main stations and tunnels for the City Rail Link project). This includes validation and verification of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) data associated with design.

In addition, Karen's team is responsible for the development of more than 1,200 work packages (known as Construction Work Packs, or CWPs). These will allow work to take place simultaneously across different project components, delivered by multiple teams, whilst ensuring alignment with installation specifications and quality assurance.

The team has also created specific project controls for the installation across several disciplines at all stations. These will integrate all installation information into a single repository to include:

  • Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
  • Productivity
  • Forward workload analysis in line with the programme
  • Resource forecasting

This information will allow City Link Alliance to view installation as it happens and will provide an ongoing forecast of progress throughout the project.

Karen and the broader Ventia Electricity & Gas project team are hitting the ground running and are already looking for others to join them.

With an estimated programme of more than 380,000 work hours, Ventia is now actively recruiting for a range of roles including construction supervisors, electrical and communications design consultants, electricians and electrical and trade assistants.

Collaboration across Ventia

Whilst much of the CRL work has happened deep below the ground (up to 42 metres!), closer to the surface there's also plenty of action. Read here to see how Ventia's Telecommunications technicians kept businesses and residents connected to the internet while the projects below rumbled on.

Ventia is once again proud to be such an integral part of this amazing project.
