Ventia, in conjunction with client RailCorp, has been recognised for the restoration of the Macdonaldtown gasholder – the only remaining gasholder in New South Wales - securing a Highly Commended in the Cultural Heritage Award category at the recent NSW Blue Star Sustainability awards.
Located in Sydney’s inner-west, the Macdonaldtown Gasworks Remediation was a significant remediation and restoration project, that saw the excavation and removal of 37,000 tonnes of contaminated soil and the restoration of the historic gasholder, to enable the area to be used safely by the community both present and future.
The project began in September 2014 and was completed in August 2016.
RailCorp engaged Ventia to undertake the remediation, drawing on the company’s experience in remediating varied and complex contaminated sites such as the former Union Carbide site in New South Wales and the former Toowoomba Gasworks site in Queensland.
Nan-Maree Schoerie, General Manager Utility Services, Ventia said, “Ventia’s Environmental Services are best in class, providing clients with a safe, unrivalled solution for the restoration of contaminated land and waterways. Our work is complex, often with the need to consider the culture and heritage of the site, and the local communities it impacts.
“We are delighted to have been recognised by the NSW Blue Star Awards for our work at Macdonaldtown and in particular for the restoration of the State’s last remaining gasholder.”
The NSW Blue Star Sustainability Awards recognise and celebrate the hard work of NSW citizens and organisations who promote responsible environmental management in their local area. They recognise civic pride, community spirit and future planning in establishing the best projects and programs to come out of NSW communities.
