Representing the latest ideas, innovations and developments, the APPEA Conference and Exhibition is the largest annual upstream oil and gas event in the Southern Hemisphere where the entire supply chain gathers to learn, network and do business.

We were proud to exhibit at and sponsor the 2021 APPEA Conference in Perth where we showcased technology and capabilities to support a safe, smart and sustainable energy future.

We feel it is important to be part of the discussions highlighting the central issues and challenges of upstream petroleum exploration and development on a national and international level.

Safer Together

During the conference, our Executive General Manager for Resources, Tim Phelan joined APPEA's CEO HSE Forum panel discussion to reflect on the challenges and impacts of mental health in the workplace in his capacity of co-champion of Safer Togeher's Health Working Group, and Contractor representative on Safer Together's Seniors Leaders Group.

Safer Together is an industry-led organisation committed to building a strong and consistent safety culture in our rapidly evolving industry, and as a member of the organisation's Industry Safety Forum, Tim joined other senior leaders from across the industry to share experiences, and to identify emerging safety challenges, perspectives and solutions.

The energy industry is known for its high safety standards. This is typically physical safety, but we know supporting mental health is just as important.

"Working together as an industry to support mental health issues helps us to ensure the systems and support mechanisms are in place to ensure individuals are supported, and that they are fit for work in all capacities', said Tim.

Assist and Assure

We also supported Arrow Energy and Shell QGC's presentation about making real safety improvements in the field, with one of our Rig and Well Services rig crews (Rig 30) demonstrating the Safe Work Process (or Step 7) from their location in the Surat Basin.

The demonstration was part of an explanation about industry leadership skills program, Assist and Assure, which is focused on engaging the workforce through three strategies: Transition to Work; Safe Work Process; and Effective Supervision.

Rig and Well Services' General Manager Energy & Minerals, Kyle Koziol, said: "We have rolled out Assist and Assure throughout our oil & gas operations and it is embraced as best practice at Rig and Well Services."

It uses common language and process for how we do pre-job planning and transition to work. It engages each member of the work team and creates consistency from the office to the field and our crews implement it every day.

At the event, our experts showcased our virtual reality capability and its benefits in training applications as well as our trademark DigiPac technology, which has been built to streamline project workflow and planning processes.

For 60 years, we have been working towards energy for a better Australia

We also sponsored the conference dinner with our Group Chief Executive Office Dean Banks talking to the 600-strong crowd about Ventia - and the industry's - journey over the past 60 years working towards energy for a better Australia.

As the dinner sponsor we were proud to be in a position to provide complimentary professional memberships for ten women in the audience to join Women in Oil and Gas, with Founder and Chair of Women in Oil and Gas, Veena Mendez, speaking at our pre-dinner networking event about their work in promoting diversity and career advancement of women in the oil and gas industry.

The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) is the peak national body representing Australia's oil and gas exploration and production industry. Congratulations to everyone who was involved in producing another fantastic APPEA conference.

APPEA works with Australian governments to help promote the development of the nation's oil and gas resources in a manner that maximises the return to the Australian industry and community.
