Ventia has been awarded the early works remediation contract for Transport for NSW's (TfNSW) light rail Stabling and Maintenance (SaM) site at Camellia.

Located near Parramatta, the SaM facility is a critical component of the Parramatta Light Rail project and will be used for the storage and maintenance of light rail vehicles during operation, and will consist of maintenance buildings and a control centre. 

The site itself is approximately 6.2 hectares and is located on the Camellia peninsula, bounded by Grand Avenue to the north and Colquhoun Street to the west, with the Parramatta River approximately 250 metres to the north. 

The site was previously used for chemical manufacturing which caused residual contamination of both soil and groundwater. 

The works will be delivered in two stages:

• Stage 1 - groundwater contamination remediation: installation of a hydraulic barrier wall along the site boundary to prevent groundwater migration, and replacement of the existing groundwater treatment plant
• Stage 2 - site capping: installation of an engineered capping system to form a barrier between contaminated and non- contaminated materials.

Ventia's Executive General Manager Utility Services Gordon Taylor said the award of this contract was testament to Ventia's capability in remediation and understanding of remediation technologies.

The first phase of the contract is due to commence in July 2018.
