Ventia has been awarded a contract by Vector Metering, to install around 950,000 4G replacement modems on smart electricity meters across New Zealand.

The 4G upgrade program will commence in August 2021.

This contract will see our technicians exchanging 2G modems for 4G replacements across the smart meter network, to help modernise the measurement of energy use across New Zealand homes and businesses.

The upgrade to 4G and 5G connectivity allows for faster speeds and greater capacity. This will help Vector Metering to better support its energy customers. It will also help to future-proof meter devices well beyond the planned shutdown of the national 2G network, slated for 2025.

Ventia General Manager New Zealand Telecommunications Andrew Desmarchelier said that our experience across previous national rollouts, including the Ultra-Fast Broadband programme, as well as the broad capability base of Ventia, proved a compelling proposition.

"Our national presence, with technicians located right across New Zealand in both the telecommunications and energy industries, enables us to support Vector Metering throughout the country," Andrew said.

To be able to utilise our expansive footprint of technicians for the rollout as well as being able to draw on the expertise from our electricity and gas business means we can manage the entire rollout end-to-end for our client.

Vector's Chief Operating Officer Metering & OnGas, Brenda Talacek, said the partnership with Ventia is another significant step forward in modernising how energy is measured in New Zealand.

"This is a major project for Vector Metering, we are looking forward to working with Ventia to ensure that our energy customers receive the best connectivity on offer through this technology upgrade," Brenda said.
