The former Portland Gasworks site at 25 Glenelg Street is undergoing an important environmental restoration to remove historical pollution and make the land safe for potential future use.
AusNet has engaged Ventia, a highly experienced environmental remediation contractor, to carry out clean-up works between August 2025 and mid-2026.
This work is being delivered under strict EPA Victoria guidelines, with independent environmental consultants and an accredited auditor supervising the process.
The remediation project will be completed in five stages:
Key activities underway this month include:
• Assembly of the temporary Odour Control Enclosure (OCE), with cranes assisting in lifting the steel frame into place
• Installation of the emissions control system for the OCE, including air filtration units to manage odour and dust
• Continued excavation of targeted areas within the site
• Transportation of contaminated soil off-site for safe disposal
• Ongoing environmental controls to manage dust, odour, and runoff
• Increased truck movements to and from the site, managed within approved haulage routes and designated hour
While every effort will be made to reduce impacts on residents, businesses, and the local community, there may be times where disruptions are unavoidable.
Here’s what you can expect:
