Overview

This project involved the installation of a remote REFCL (Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter) unit on the BN11 22kv Feeder, located approximately 21kms from the Benalla zone substation. This was necessary to meet the regulatory requirement for compliance with the Electrical Safety (Bushfire Mitigation) Amendment regulations 2016.

Description

The project involved constructing a new substation with crucial components, including the isolation transformer, station service transformer, ground fault neutraliser, and a control building housing protection and control relays, AC & DC distribution panels, communications equipment, and the ground fault neutraliser control panel.

To accomplish the project tasks efficiently, a range of specialised equipment was utilised, such as excavators, graders, rollers, a 200t crane, telehandler, elevated work platform, and protection relay test equipment.

Additionally, the project took into account environmental and sustainability factors, implementing measures like soil testing, a soil management plan, and appropriate waste disposal procedures. This ensured that the project was not only successful but also aligned with eco-friendly practices.

The project’s success relied on the collaboration of multiple organizations and contractors, each playing a crucial role in its execution.

  • The project aims to mitigate bushfires caused by powerlines contacting trees, which will significantly improve safety for the community. Additionally, it will enhance network stability and contribute to a more reliable power supply.
