Embracing technology to remediate Barangaroo

Ventia’s Environmental Services team brings decades of experience and the latest technology to the delivery of remediation excavation works at Sydney Harbour’s iconic Barangaroo.

The project involves the design, construction and operation of all the critical remediation infrastructure at this former industrial site. Not only is the project complex with stringent regulatory requirements, the urban renewal of the precinct is high profile and politically sensitive.

Being an inner-city location means residential exposure, CBD traffic and strict work hours make access challenging for the team. Even with these constraints, over 200,000 of the 450,000 tonnes of contaminated waste has already been excavated, transported and disposed of – 30,000 of which is classified as hazardous and requires treatment before disposal.

The project includes one of the largest and most innovative odour control enclosures ever assembled in Australia. Using ‘first of its kind’ engineering technology, the ‘tents’ will be removed by winching them along tracks using a series of rollers, before they are demobilised in sections, reducing the need for complex and high risk lifting operations.
Delivering innovative ways of working to the Barangaroo Project has been a core focus of the team. This has been achieved by harnessing a range of technologies including computer modelling for planning; real-time machine guidance technology to excavate heavily contaminated areas; CCTV cameras for remote monitoring of progress and safety; GPS truck tracking to ensure every tonne of contaminated material gets to its destination; and an online database and smartphone app to capture the entire materials tracking process.

The team has also been able to collect extensive environmental data and further enhance safety through the use of a new multipurpose drone.
