Working alongside the NT Government’s Department of Mining and Energy, Ventia’s scope of works includes a large-scale water treatment program to neutralise acidity and improve water quality across approximately 540 megalitres of water before it is safely released from site..
Located in the Gulf region approximately 1,200 kilometres from Darwin, this remote and isolated site requires extensive planning to safely deliver the project.
Through carefully considered transport logistics, Ventia has designed, engineered and mobilised specialist water treatment systems, pumps and dosing equipment to commence the treatment program.
1,300 tonnes of hydrated lime have been transported to site via triple road trains all the way from Darwin, with pumping, mixing and dosing activities well underway.
Ventia’s Engineering & Professional Services team undertook design and engineering for the treatment system, while our remote-site communications team supported the mobilisation of satellite communications to allow the team to remain connected whilst undertaking the work.
The importance of the Sandy Flat project extends beyond environmental remediation. The former Redbank Mine and surrounding area are significant to Traditional Owners, with culturally important sites located all around the region including Hanrahan’s Creek and Masterton’s Cave.
By helping improve water quality and address the legacy impacts of historical mining activity, the project supports the long-term restoration of an area that is environmentally and culturally important to the region.
